Here is a before and after from a recent gutter clearance. In the first image, the gutter was packed with moss, debris and built-up muck along the edge of the roof, which is exactly the sort of thing that stops rainwater draining away the way it should.
Left to build up, a blocked gutter stops working properly. Water backs up instead of running off, which can lead to it overflowing down the wall, pooling where it shouldn't, or finding its way into places it can cause damage over time. Moss in particular holds onto moisture and keeps building, so a gutter that's been left for a while tends to get worse quickly rather than staying the same.
In the second image, the gutter has been cleared right back, moss, debris and muck removed so the channel runs clear and rainwater can drain away as it's meant to. It's a straightforward job but an easy one to put off, and it's worth doing before the wetter months when a blocked gutter causes the most problems.
