Timber decking ages differently to most other surfaces. Instead of just getting dirty, it also weathers, and over time that combination of dirt, algae and general exposure can leave decking looking grey, tired and slippery underfoot.
That was the situation on a recent decking clean. The boards had been down for a while and had picked up the usual build-up of dirt and algae, along with general weathering from being outside all year round. The grooves between the boards in particular had collected grime that a standard sweep or scrub was never going to shift.
We gave the whole deck a thorough pressure wash, working carefully across the boards and into the grooves to lift out the dirt without damaging the timber. The result was a noticeable change in both colour and texture. The boards came back to their warm natural tone, the grain was visible again, and the surface felt clean and safe underfoot rather than slippery.
Decking is also one of those surfaces where letting it go too long makes the next clean harder, and in some cases can shorten the life of the timber itself. A periodic jet wash is a simple way to keep it looking right and keep it safe to use, without needing to replace or re-treat the whole deck.
